It really has no affect unless you run it out of gas. Then you risk burning the fuel pump up.

well, the light came on before I stopped for gas but I never ran out .... figured it would go off after I filled it but ... not so much .....

I'm experiencing a similar problem. We filled the gas tank and the light came on 10 miles down the road. Will the light go out on its own after a while if the problem if fixed? I know on my other cars it will, (not Volvos).

 

It is probably becuase of the oxygen sensor. It also happened to me. It is not very important.

 

try disconnecting the battery for at least 5 minutes and when you reconnect the battery and start your car, the light should be out. Only problem is that you will have to enter the code to get your radio working again.

 

Have you checked the gas cap? I've got a 2001 C70, and the only time I've seen the "check engine" light come on it turned out the gas cap hadn't been tightened all the way.

If that's the issue, it will reset itself ---but it'll take a week or so. (i believe i was told 14 on and offs, but it's been so long I can't recall) If you're experiencing no other problems (no power loss, no burning anything, no drop in mpg ---and you had someone else pump gas (as i did), or were distracted when you were doing it, or find the cap hadn't "clicked," you probably can wait a few days to see if the light resets.
