On starting T5 last night, the REC and A/C lights began blinking. Noted no automatic blower start and no heat. Is this solely a short or does this mean the blower motor or worse is shot?

If the lights are still blinking, the error codes is still stored. It would be best to have the error codes read first, to at least know what caused the first problem.

OK, but... well, if the message gets stored and increases, you wont know for sure WHICH one is the real culprit later.

ok i am fairly new witmy 850, but i had the same issue, forget all the fun code stuff, the dealership informed me of my problem, after a long season of cold and heat outside and induring the elements and imbarassing coments im too hot or ist cold!!! well even after i hard wiredthe motoer and heat element i just found out that early 850 climate control boxes short out. you can get a used one for 75.00 or new one for 650.00, yea, so i got a used unit, works perfectly, no blinking lights of death, all air and heat and dual climate control too. yippie! now to fix the seat, the oil leaks, and the scary boost gauge just froze in the middle, but my external gauge works still? hmmmm. hope that helps.

Well - codes read out as excess electrical current required. Has also intermittently making horrid screech. Has since completely given out.

Around the time, also required hard reboot as jump after battery drain resulted in computer reading really weird (almost as if read of fuel input rather than calculated "mpg").

Am told by phone diagnostic that will need blower motor, but they think the resistor is likely to be okay. Any ideas if that is true?

Am starting to get a little frustrated.

I'm having this same problem. When I start the car I get the two blinking lights for the rec and ac and the fan does not work. My car is a 1994 850 turbo sedan. The problem started with it not working then I'd turn the car off and back on and the fans would work, then one day that didn't work. I'd appreciate all the help I can get being that I am not to good with cars and I just started driving my 850. Thanks

Ginnetti,

I think you have an OBD1 system, so you can check the engine codes in the engine bay.

Under the General Non Volvo Specific Forum in this website, there is a link in the Links thread.

Go there and surf for the way to read an obd1 code. Print the code error sheet for future use as well.

Good luck.

Hey All,
An excessive current to the blower motor is the code you have. Sometimes the blower motor works on and off for months - maybe hours. Sometimes they squeel, sometimes they don't. Changing it is not that bad, couple hours for the first-timer. Blower motor resistor (powerstage) should be fine. Why fix what ain't broke.I purchased a used one on e-bay and it worked for 2 weeks then seized.I purchased the 2nd one from fcp groton for $100 and haven't had any trouble since.
