I have a 2000 Volvo V40 for about three years. The beginning of this year, the engine light came on. I went to my mechanic and he checked to see what it would be. The code that he got from the Volvo was P00014 and P00015. I'm not sure what the code would be from the dealership would have to relook at the paperwork. I believe that it had to do with the crankshaft sensory. My mechanic replaced the crankshaft, oil change, and flushed the engine out. The light came back on. I then went to the dealership to get a diagnostic for $115. They told me it was the crankshaft, expensive oil, and flushing the engine. My mechanic already did this. I went back to my mechanic and he told me he cannot do anything. I then went back to the dealership and they told me it would cost me $4,500 for them to clean out the whole engine, drop the oil pane, expensive oil, etc. They then told me that they couldn't do it because the age of the car. While this is going on, I need an inspection sticker in Mass. The car fails because of the engine light. Since the dealership told me to change my oil to the expensive oil it caused the seal near the timing belt to go. My mechanic sealed the seal and replaced the timing belt for me.
I finally talked to my father whose a mechanic since I can remember. I told him whats going on with the volvo. My father told me that the dealership shouldn't have told us to use the expensive oil because it would loosen the seals throughout the engine. He told me to use an oil additive, which would clean out the engine and keep the seals hard. I put the oil additive in on Thursday morning, April 29th and that same day in the evening the engine light was off. I've been driving for five days and the engine light has been off. I thought this might be helpful to other people owning volvos. My car at this time has passed inspection for another year.
