The 60K service is, in my opinion, a complete waste of time. What you can do is ask the dealer for a write up of the things that are done. Generally, they have these pamphlets that will let you know. I believe the dealer charges $799 or $699 for the work.

If you read the list, you'll be upset. They "test the windshield wipers," (I believe you can do that one yourself) and "road test the car" (which is something you do EVERY DAY if you drive it!), they change the oil, change the air filter (which is a $20 part that you can easily do yourself), and do a rough inspection of the vehicle. I don't think they even change the cabin air filter which is a simple procedure also.

I used the list and checked off every thing on it, it took me about half of the day and cost me about $400 less.

 

"Complete waste of time" is the biggest factory service your car will ever receive.

Power antenna
Trunk/hood, hinges and latches

Inspect
Automatic transmission fluid

Oh don't get me wrong! All of that service is important! However, it can be done for considerably less than $700!

 

It seems like different shops have different lists. From memory, mine included cabin filter change and parking brake adjustment (which was needed). I don't remember the cost. DIY saves $ but not time. Personally, I like hitting the suggested maintenances and add that in to the cost of ownership.

Not like the old days when I could find enough room to get a hand down in the motor.

 

Most of the 10K services are a complete waste of money. You can do most of them yourself.

Sometimes I have difficulty with extracting a writer's meaning. bdl444 did you mean that the 60k service is a waste of time, or it is not a waste?

If your list is a complete list of what a owner will receive in exchange for forking over $600 - then it is a waste of money.

But if replacing brake pads, or other brake 'components' is included in the cost, then it's a bit more accceptable.

I've read that some folks recommend dealer service for the s60 because they'll lube the 'sub-chassis." Is that ture? What does that job entail? Can it be DIY?

 

I just dropped my 2002 S60 off for its 60,000 mile service at my local independent mechanic.

Besides looking things over and lubing the car up, they will:

Change oil + filter
Change engine air filter
Change cabin filter
Change spark plugs
Flush/fill coolant
Flush/fill brake fluid
Rotate tires

All for about $450.

(NB: I changed the filters myself, and this dropped the price to $360. I'll work on top of the car, but not below it).

 

I fell for the $850 60K service -- plugs, wires, radiator flush, oil change, rotate tires, filters, inspect this and that, top off fluids, grease this and that. Regretted not asking more questions and thinking about taking it somewhere else or doing a lot of it myself. BTW - dealer recommended I do all this stuff at 40K miles and I declined. What a racket.
