I was wondering if anyone had more information about the well known issue of Oil consumption on the 2016 xc90s. Apparently there was a class action lawsuit vs volvo. Volvo had sent out letters offering an extended warranty and a free oil consumption test to determine if the vehicle qualifies to rebuild the pistons and rings/seals causing the consumption. I had called into the dealer to discuss the issue and they had insisted that only the Us corrects that issue. Does this not seem odd to anyone else living in Canada?

Hi, as many Volvo owner I'm experiencing oil consumption on my XC60 2015 3.0 L. with only 69000 km. Also, my dealer confirmed that US extension warranty for oil consumption is not applicable for Canada. I say noting for Canadian owner on action lawsuit, seems to be for US… Only thing I found for Canada/US is a Volvo Technical Journal for consumption test reference nu. TJ 35526.1.1. I’m wondering what our options are, is there a legal action we can do to Volvo Canada ?.

We bought a pre owned dealer certified 2016 XC90 in 2019 with 78,000 kms. We were seeing a need to add oil before oil change. Before the warranty expired, we did a Volvo consumption test and passed! Within a year, We were putting a litre of oil in our car every 2000 kms. We are now putting a litre of oil in almost every 500-1000 kms fependingnif city or highway travel. Our next option is to sell, or repair engine pistons, etc at a cost of $7-8,000. The dealer is looking into whether Volvo will assist with the cost of the repairs. It would be great if VOLVO would take ownership of the problem they have with their cars and repair at their costs! I have also been looking into whether there is a Canada class action suit for this!

Waiting for a consultation with class action lawyer, Toronto. I live in Kingston. Meanwhile, I visited Volvo today to get an estimate for a ring job on my S 60, cylinder three is leaking oil upward and fouling the plug. All parts are listed in the estimate, but one of the o rings is a replacement. It says o ring 31109233 replaces o ring 3062278. Wonder if this is the smoking gun, pardon the expression.

Hi Brian, do you have any update for the class action lawyer ?. On my hand I'm doing some test with different oil type. I have tried the Liqui Moly oil with Ceratec additive, some European Volvo forum were recommending it and look like that it reduced my consumption to 1 liter per 5000km. And now I do the test with Amsoil (from tests benchs it seam that it’s one of the best oil type on the market) I have added also the Ceratec additive. I will see the result soon... What I understand is the oil do a different and only few manufactures have 100% synthetic oil as Ligui Moly and Amsoil, also Castrol but not the standard synthetic one, only with Fluid Titanium Technology.

My 2015 Volvo S60 just started burning oil at 118k. Took it to the Volvo dealership I purchased it at the was charged $600 for an oil consumption test. The service mgr and dept were well aware of the Volvo US extended warranty (which I assume was a result of the class action lawsuit). I was told Volvo Canada had no such warranty and I would have to approach the manufacturer to see what sort of compensation I could get. I would be more than happy to join a class action lawsuit if I don't get anywhere with head office.

I have a 2016 XC90, been letting Volvo know of my oil consumption since Feb 2022! My vehicle failed the test, and now this Volvo extended warranty won’t cover it. Why? Well, I never received anything from Volvo and wasn’t even aware until the service advisor told me to call. A “ticket” was put in with Volvo headquarters and they state that I’m out of the extended warranty, yet I NEVER had any opportunity to even get it since I didn’t receive anything! They want to replace where the current leak is, which is $2600, then do another test! Any help??

I’m not getting anywhere with Volvo either. I had the consumption test done. I am still within what Volvo considers normal consumption. I feel sure by the time I am exceeding the normal limit, Volvo will say the car is Too far beyond the warranty for Volvo to assume any responsibility. do you know what they planned to do or fix for $2600?

This is my first actual oil consumption test! Despite bringing it to my advisor at the time, which I was well within these “extended warranty parameters” such as mileage, my advisor never suggested this test. I was just informed last week of this Volvo lawsuit regarding oil consumption. Apparently letters were sent out to Volvo customers of this “extended warranty” opportunity to fix the issue, which I never received anything! I was informed to reach out to Volvo headquarters, which I have, a case was put in and 24 hours later I received an email stating they would NOT assist as I’m outside of those “warranty guidelines!.” Like I’ve advised them, how is an owner to know of this extended warranty if we weren’t notified!! I didn’t receive ANYTHING, did you? You’re correct, it will be $2,600 to fix the current consumption THEN want to do another consumption test to ensure it’s not leaking elsewhere! I’m furious! Definitely not a company I want to continue doing business with!!

Read my post from Jan 5th 2024 - i have been in the same boat for 3 tears and 30K miles and OI have been pouring in 10 six packs of 6 quarts of oil each the past 3 years and 30K miles. These guys behave known about the issue for 10 years, but they have been concealing it and denying it and continue to do so. One of my cylinders failed 2 weeks ago and the rapier is $10K at a Volvo dealer in OH - no assistance offered by Volvo despite the issue commenced while under certified pre-owned warranty 3 1/2 years ago and despite me having done ALL services by the clock by Volvo dealers. Without another class action lawsuit against them, these pigs won’t budge, unfortunately.

It’s complete crap!!! I just received ANOTHER email stating that Volvo will not step in to assist bc now I’m out of their “extended warranty parameters” due to mileage not by year. But the issue began PRIOR to this lawsuit and it’s noted in their system from 2022 when my vehicle was at 89k miles, now my vehicle has 107k miles. I’m totally in agreement that something needs done for owners like us!! If you find anything feel free to email me: barnes.anisha@gmail.com

Hell, I'm in louisiana......I also had zero idea, but I literally just put 4 quarts of oil into the car within driving one tank of gas....but the kicker, besides also having the sunroof issue, is that I also had the serpintine belt pulley issue wherein it seizes up and no matter what, due to a defect in the timing belt cover, the other belt also ruins your engine as it gets sucked in there and makes the timing belt "jump". I have been babying this car....needing it to last, and was just over 60,000 miles....this is BS....they just lost about 1000 potential customers, as I will make sure no one I encounter ever buys one again. And I have to meet dozens of people a day due to my job. Or at least I did before my cars engine was destroyed. I bought it certified used and put a soft 22,000 miles on it. I definitely put more oil in the car than it received during normal oil changes over it's lifetime. This is unreal. Not to mention all the money paid for comprehensive insurance for a paid off car in louisiana. I have zero at fault accidents period, yet my insurance was 300 a month or just under that the last two years.

My 2016 XC60 failed the oil consumption test on 11/22/23 and I was put on the list to have the piston rings replaced - WHEN parts became available. I checked on the status of parts today and was told it won't be until some time in 2025 before they can repair my car since so many are ahead of mine and they only receive a few parts sporadically. Worse, the warranty to replace the piston rings is tied to me as the owner. Therefore, I cannot sell the car until this work is done. So, I'm stuck with a car that has a known serious problem because the manufacturer isn't supplying the parts. This was my 7th Volvo over the years and I would have otherwise been ready for a new XC60. Sadly, it's now my last Volvo.

I have a 2016 XC60 and am tackling this issue as well. I was keeping an eye on the case in New Jersey, and obviously saw that it was settled privately. I’d love to be included on any communications regarding an additional potential class action. Is there already an established email thread or would folks like me to start one?

Our xc90 caught fire while driving on the highway!! my husband was driving it and the Police had to rescue him!! Volvo canada didn’t even answer and our dealer washed his hands from any responsibility. That was So much of a life-threatening situation and I feel, as consumers, we require accountability from the dealership and Volvo.

Our Volvo 2016 XC90 just blew a valve and Volvo saying will require complete new engine rebuild at this point. Estimates from $8-10,000. Dealers are recommending its not worth it and should just dump the car. This is ridiculous. Started having the engine oil challenges about a year ago. Have added (considerable) oil on three occasions immediately when got engine warnings. Have been meticulous with Service & Maintenance and car only has 78K miles. Unbelievable that Volvo has not stood behind and fixed this issue as frequently as its been cited her and in other forums. Definitely interested in any legal actions which might be going on. Having trouble finding any active efforts nationwide or in my state (VA).

Since purchase discovered leaky sunroof (cost8k to get it fixed ) bc car made without "dems" Last week engine issue due to pistons/misfiring... Still owe 17k on it and have to figure out how to get some dealership to buy it ...but will be in the hole and I feel guilty to even try to get it sold. Same here. I am the second owner of a 2016 XC90. This is my 2nd Volvo. My first Volvo was a 2007 XC90 and never had a problem which is why I purchased the 2016 for the upgrades that did not exist on the 2007 model like appleplay, cameras, etc.
First my autostart went; Volvo stated that I needed a technology upgrade that would be thousands of dollars. Then the oil issues began. They had me pay for a 2 part diagnostic assessment to tell me what appears to be a very public and common issue with this vehicle. Now they want $1800 for new pistons and rings.
Please add me to the class action suit. Also, need 2 motors in the sunroof and trunk no longer lifts or closes automatically. My vehicle has NEVER been in any accidents and I have only put 30,000 miles on the vehicle in over 5 years of owning it. With 1rst owners mileage, I am at 74,000.
Thanks for sharing and including me,
