the speedo on my '96 850 operates for the first 3-4 Ks then stops, taco, fuel & temp all ok, I'm led to believe it's connected to abs not working, any thoughts please ?

That does sound highly possible as cars without ABS generally have a sensor on the gearbox or flywheel. So I would guess yours would get the info from a wheel speed sensor.
the 850 uses i think either the left front or right front ABS sensor to generate the speedo signal, if the ABS unit or sensor isnt working the speedo will not read (it goes via the ABS unit).
Often its an electrical connection in the ABS unit itself, the solder connections get vibrated and then you get a crack form around the connector pin and you get issues, sometimes you can wedge a piece of cardboard down the side of the connector block and this will help for a time, but eventually the pins need to be resoldered.
If the ABS light is intermittent its more likely to be the bad solder joint in the ABS unit that the wheel sensor.
