Hi all,

I've been scouring the internet for advice on this issue and thankfully came across this website. I bought this car with 64K miles on it a year ago this month and have dropped about $2K in service issues and am losing patience.

Within the last week the check engine light came on along with 2 error messages, "transmission service required" and "emission system service required". I'm not too worried about the second message as I just had the fuel injection cleaned and it may just be running rich. However, the transmission message worries me.

Does anyone happen to know what this may mean?

The best thing to do it have the dealer pull the codes or an indipendant shop pull the codes. It could be many things. When they did the injector cleaning did they clean the throttle body?If not that might be what the check engine light is or it could be a loose gas cap.The check engine light and the trans light could be about 100 diffrent things.Thats why the codes need to be pulled first.

Thanks Tech,

Appreciate the response. I have a way to pull the codes but don't know what they mean. Do you know where I could get that info?

The scanner should give you a breif discription of the codes. You can look on the net.I don't deal that much with the aftermarket scanners.

I was able to pull a fault code of P0810 or "clutch position control error." No clue what this means, any ideas?

auto that's why I thought the code was a bit strange. I am experiencing gear slippage occassionally. I am hoping that it just needs some minor adjusting.

You could have a bad Valve body or the trans is on its way out.

The valve body is what controls the shifts of the transmission.

Hi, I can imagine these messages driving you grumbly...
Did your dealer/garage exchange the transmission fluid?
My Volvo independent garage has come across the same problem (luckily not with my car) and stated that it is very important to have the correct transmission fluid put into the system. No other brands, just the only exactly prescribed by Volvo.
The transmission is very sensitive to that...
Have you checked with your garage?
Good luck!

Most of the dealers use aftermarket fluid but compaired to the Volvo fluid. One is full synthetic and the other is synthetic blend fluid.

There is a common problem with the brake pedal position sensor. This may be a mistranslation on the part of the scanner. If so it should be relatively inexpensive, it is pretty easy to change.

The only thing the brake pedal sensor affects is the cruise control. When it goes bad it sets the check engine light and the abs light and stops the cruise control from working.
