I am preparing to flush the transmission fluid on my 89 740 Turbo Sedan. I purchased it used recently, and it has 120K on it. I have read that if the fluid has never been changed, it could make it worse to do so. I checked the fluid level with the stick though, and it comes off red, so I assume that the fluid is okay to flush. Am I incorrect in this assumption?

Secondly, what fluid should I use? I read that it needs Dexron III but it looks like most AT fluid is that these days. I will also be doing it to a 96 850 wagon, and assume that I will use the same fluid.

Any comments or suggestions?

i don't want to contradict TECH but as a truck mechanic i have learned flushing any auto trans over 75,000 mi. has a 90% chance of killing it. if the fluid is clean than drain pan, change filter and refill. don't flush it all out....!!!!
