I am thinking of buying a 00' or 01' S40. A year ago I bought a 00' Passat 1.8t and I love the car to death. It has been great to me in everyway. My wife needs a new car and she wants something like the passat or she will take mine. When I bought the Passat I didn't testdrive and S40s becuase they were not in my pricerange. Now it seems the coin has flipped. I am having a hard time finding well priced Passats and and I finding many well priced s40s.

Anyway, I am looking to get some feedback from owners of s40s. What do you like about them, what do you hate. Please don't just respond with "THE S40 IS DA BOMB!" That doesn't help me. I am most interested in the following aspects:

Build Quality (ratlling or door panels, etc)

Performance comparisons to a Passat would be nice (you can only learn so much in a 10 minute test drive)

Reliability and Maitenance costs (what should I expect to break on a s40 with 70K miles)

Forums. This is big for me. I do all of my auto repairs. VW/Audi forums are plentiful and helpfull. How are volvo forums.

General Impressions from owner.

Thank you

Hi
I have a 2000 S40 and have had no problems. The car is comfortable and rides quietly. The sound system is above average. Everything works well. No brake problems, I mention this because this is what I heard was a common problem.
Let's see, gas mileage is ok, better on the hwy. as you know, the 1.9 Turbo is QUICK.

My car has the wood grain, leather, sunroof, electric everything and I gotta say for the $$$ has been a great deal for me. I had a Jetta, unfortunately, it was an awful car. I was glad to see it go.

Best things, the handling, quickness and the #1 thing to me. The seats, all Volvo seats are very comfortable.

Worst thing- ridiculous cup holders.....

I suggest driving it for a day, have a mechanic look it over, check the brake pads.

And, as soon as you buy it, put new Michelins on it and enjoy.

The couple of draw backs that most S40's have are rear brakes wear faster than the front. The engine mounts were kinda on the weak side wearing out faster than normal. And like any turbo charged model the turbo return line o-ring goes bad causing an oil leak.Which most parts were updated to diffrent ones lately.

On the plus side they are comfortable. They are pretty quick and handle good.Very safe and built fairly well.

My vote is to go for it! I have a 2000 S40, which I purchased used. No real problems at all. It's a solid car, no wierd rattles or noises. I lucked out and found one (Jan 04) with only 28K on the odometer. It has the winter & performance packages, everything I wanted in a car and all at a very very resonable price. It has been very comfortable on long trips and gets pretty good gas milage.

I did replace the brake pads soon after purchase (front & rear). I used an aftermarket set (English made) from IPD. No problems.

I love it, it's quick, reliable, comfortable and has all the bells and whistles of a much more expensive car! I read all the horror stories about it before I bought the car, glad I didn't believe them !!!

I have had my 2000 S40 for 4.5 years and have about 71000 (mostly highway) miles on it. I can only give it a neutral recommendation.

If you are somewhat handy with repairs yourself, and can find one at a reasonable price, I would recommend it. If you don't fill both of these squares, stay away from the car. I say this because repairs, although no more frequent than most cars I've had, are expensive and difficult to get done right. Volvo should be ashamed to put their name on the couple of dealer service departments I've used, mostly for warranty work.

My 2000 has had 2 recall items fixed at dealers, the headlight wiring harness and the vacuum pump. The headlight harness has helped a little, but this car still eats bulbs like my son eats Cheerios. The vacuum pump turned into a battle over a $60 dollar relay that I replaced myself 2 weeks before the recall was official and was told I would be reimbursed for once the recall came out (yeah, right, check is in the mail).

Having said that, other minuses:

-Cup holder in the dash? What idiot engineer designed that piece of crap?
-Brake pad wear? I have to agree with others, they do tend to wear quick.
-Car has a couple more rattles than I would expect from other european imports.
-Rear seats unusable for anyone but small children.
-Parts are sometimes hard to find and never cheap.
-Knowledgeable mechanics, see comment about parts. Don't even think about going to the dealership for repairs before you check your bank balance.

On the plus side:

-Leather seats are very comfortable. (I spend at least 2 hours in car on most drives)
-Good acceleration and power for a small engine.
-Very good gas mileage. I get 30 mpg highway if I stay below 70 mph. 28.5 between 70 and 80 mph.
-Nice highway ride for a small car.
-Nimble handling, good in traffic.
-More trunk space than most other cars of its size

BTW- I put Pirelli tires on after the stock Michelins wore and am very pleased

I have a 2001 S40 with 100k and it brill less hassle than my Saab 2001 93 convertible with 40k on the clock. Just make sure its has a full volvo history and ithasn't been abused. It should last you 200k (I have seen one with 219k on original exhaust and many other parts) no probs with some regular maintiance. My advice either use main dealer or a specialist if you can find one more helpful than my local specialist. Not many other cars I have experienced that will last and drive this well, they are share alot of parts and running gear with the Mitisubishi Carisma hence the GDi engine in some models.

My best mate has bought a 2000 S40 100k as well and great no probs he is very happy.

I find the cup holder is perfect for mounting a ipod allowing the driver a great view and easy access
That idi#t was ahead of his time IMO.

i have 75k on mine and have loved it scene day one!

mine is just ace. the s40 is an amazing car and out of the dozens of different cars iv'e driven in my short life i must say it's the smoothest and most relaxing. it'll be an animal when you want it to, then settle into a pussycat when you're finished. try tearing up some back roads. i chickened out long before the car does! easy to improve those niggles like the front understeer and rear grip. my advice, buy one with the sports setup. it sits on firmer on the ground and handles better.
