My sunroof will not retract to the open position i can open the back side up however.

any ideas what might be wrong

Something sounds like it is jammed.What happens when you try to open it towards the back of the car?

Nothing happens it sounds like it is dead.
I can open the sunroof rear up though

Might be a bad sunroof switch.If it will tilt up and down but nothing happens when you push the switch back might be the switch.

Is that difficult to repair

No it's fairly easy to replace the sunroof switch.
