Hello everyone,

I just joined this forum so let me introduce myself.

I'm a 30 year old car enthusiast living in Belgium. My current car is a Peugeot 406 V6 3.0 but I'll be selling it soon...

Looking for a new car I visited Alfa-Romeo, Honda and did an extensive research on other makes on the Net. It was my girlfriend's idea to check volvo, and I'm glad I did. The moment I sat inside I knew the car is for me....

I'll test drive it next week, but its not the subject of this post...

I spoke to the dealer today and he said that the only difference between the old D5 (163 bhp) and the new one (185 bhp) is software, there were no mechanical upgrades. He offered me an 'old' D5 with an upgrade (which they make on their own) boosting the car's power to 212 bhp and 460 Nm of torque.

The idea sounds tempting but is this a good way to go? How does a modification like this affect the durability of the engine? Can the manual gearbox handle the torque?

I would very much appreciate your comments.

Thanks in advance

If it were me I would try it.

The manual gearbox will handle it no problem.

I think I'll try...is it true that there is no difference in the mechanics between the old and new D5?

If there is any changes at all they are so minor they can't be seen.

I found an interesting article on the subject. Here's the link:

http://autoweb.drive.com.au/cms/A_104358/newsarticle.html

It seems that the new D5 has following features:

* Injection system has been improved with new injectors and a more advanced
injection process

* New-generation turbocharger with larger compressor wheel, cambered vanes and
electronic control

* Gas exchange system has been upgraded for optimum air flow and exhaust gas
flow

Any comments? I'm still not sure whether to buy the old D5+upgrade (chip) or shell out some more cash for the new engine...
