I am having a problem turning the ignition keyt all the way. This is a Volvo s 70 with 110k miles. Never had this problem before. Tried two keys. Neither would turn past 1/4 turn. Is there a code which will unlock this?
Sounds like the lock cylinder might have gone bad.
Did you try playing with the steering wheel when you try turning the key?
Sometimes the steering wheel keeps pressure on the lock and wont turn the key.
Yes - I can turn the key far enough to unlock the wheel but the ignition will not turn any further than about 1/4 turn. My wife suggested it might be an anti theft device (It was her car for years. ) Any thoughts on that?
No nothing else at all for a anti-theft device.
The next thing to do is remove the covers around the steering coulmn.
The top one will just pull up and come out once you undo the rubber boot in the back. The bottom one you will need to remove 2 or 3 t-25 screws. Then look for the electrical part of the ignition switch. It has a round black plug going to it and has 2 small screws holding it to the coulmn.Use a small straight screw driver and remove it.Then try turning the key and see it it turns more. With the key in the ignition you can also use a screw driver in the electrical part of the switch to start it up.
