Good evening everybody
I dont know if I have a problem. When I apply the handbrake on my car I am still able to rock the car forwards and backwards about 2 inches. I got my dealer (not a Volvo specialist) to check it out and he says it is normal. Is he right or is there something to worry about.

You will have a slight bit of movement between the pads moving and the suspension moving.

The handbrake or emergency brake is designed to hold the vehicle not to stop it. Therefore it will have some movement as Tech pointed out.

Thank you both for your your prompt replies. The brakes are otherwise very good and the handbrake does hold the vehicle even on steep hills, I was just worried about what seemed to me excess movement.
Thanks again and best wishes

Mine does the same thing. Scared the hell out of me the first time!! Only car I ve ever had that rolled this much, but apparently its a Volvo thing. At least it holds after it rolls the first inch or two!!

That is what worried me. I know some movement is possible but it was the stop with a clunk that made me think something was not right. After these comments I am now not so worried thank you all. I am still very impressed with this car and I still grin from ear to ear when driving it. My son says it is a "Grandads" car but it can easily hold its own with the boy racers we have in the U.K.

Thanks again all

Sorry, I cant help u there. U could try and find a repair/shop manual at a larger auto parts store or do a google search if no one else replies.

Sorry cannot tell you how to adjust it but when I took the car to the dealer for checking it only to obout 15 minutes to adjust so it cant be too involved.

Best wishes

yeah cheers........ thought the whole idea of an volvo owners forum was to exchange information and make simple jobs approachable for the novice diy'ers...
im sure tightening a hand brake is not a hard task, if i had a look id probably suss it out quick enough.....the idea here though was to get relavant information reguarding the task in hand, therefore, being prepared for the job, making it as easy as possible.
guees ill suss it out for myself.
thanks a bunch.
