I have a 93 240 with about 76K on it. Today after driving for a few hours, I parked the car. A few minutes later I had to move it and could not get the shifter out of park without a great deal of difficulty; I thought I was going to break it. Once out of park it shifted normally, and the transmission shifts normally with minimal noise while driving. I checked the ATF and it may be a bit low; it was difficult to read the dipstick. Any ideas?

There is a problem with the shift lock.
If you reach your finger in the hole by the L on the shifter plate you should feel a lever.Push it to the side and it should come out of park.

I have the same problem and found this:
I then opened the
glove box and started reading. And this is what it said, If for some reason
you can't shift into reverse check the brake light fuse. If it burned out. The
car will not let you go into reverse. So I took a fuse out of the spare holder
and put it in. Pushed the button and still nothing. GRRRRR Read some more and
it said to stick your finger inside the shifter housing and there is a little
switch flick it to the left. Did it and POOOFF the car went into reverse and I
was home in an hour. So, check the fuse its next to the driver side kick
panel. And look for the switch inside the shifter.
