Do the lights come on? This sounds like a tailgate wiring problem that is common with the wagons, maybe a fellow wagon owner on here can help.

 

I always check the ground strap/lead from the tailgate to the body near the hinges. it can cause issues if it is loose or corroded.

I would also check the switch on the brake pedal to make sure those two wires are not grounding or touching each other.

Open the tailgate and see if it persists. If doing that changes the problem, you have your culprit.

If I'm dumb enough to drive with my tailgate up all hell breaks loose. Yes, I need to replace both sides...

I think you might require replacing the wiring. Take it to the dealer and get it checked
