it is a '96 850 wagon and the ac compressor does not engage. I have had the system charged. The system will come on but not always. The service department sugested to clean the switch going to the compressor but where is it. Any other suggestions for a trouble shoot.
Thanks from a hot driver and worse the wife is not happy.

Open the hood and look on the passenger side (right side) and you will see a black metal pipe going into the body of the car.In that metal pipe close to the body you will see a electrical connector.Unplug the connector and jump the connector with a peice of wire and test the function then.

If everthing works fine than either the low pressure is bad or you have a bad leak and it is empty again.

It didn't kick in the compressor. I know it has to bea switch somehere in fact the AC did come on while I was driving today but would not come back on later. ANy additional thoughts?

The plug leading to the switch you jumped check it for power.
If you have no pwer then most likely the A/C control head is bad.
