2010 6 speed manual gearstick removal

Hi guys, I have a sloppy gearstick. Would like to remove the gearstick and gaitor for access to the plastic assembly underneath. Have managed to unclip the gaitor but the shift knob refuses to budge. Suggestions?
Also what is the correct part name for the ball like assembly under the gaitor, will no doubt need replacing and is this a job for home repair? I'm reasonably handy but no expert but willing to learn. Thanks in advance, Gary
