 Reshimming The A/c Compressor Clutch |

Once compressor is off set it like the following pic and remove the 10mm screw in the middle of the pulley.
(IMG:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/mustang8719/picture520.jpg) Then carefully remove the outer part of the Clutch.(There is a special tool which I didn't have I used to screw drivers but be careful) (IMG:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/mustang8719/picture521.jpg) (IMG:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/mustang8719/picture522.jpg) Then either the shims will come out with the outer peice like mine did or they will be sitting on the shaft once the outer part is removed. (IMG:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/mustang8719/picture523.jpg) (IMG:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/mustang8719/picture524.jpg) (IMG:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/mustang8719/picture525.jpg) If you look closely the washers/shims are different thicknesses. You will need to Measure the thickness and then find one a little thinner and reinstall and check the Gap between the outer and inner part of the clutch. I will have to find out the exact specs but I believe it needs to be .016 Cannot be more than .020. Use a fueller gauge to measure the gap. |

Is it possible to pull the outer portion of the clutch without removing the whole compressor?

There really isn't enough clearance to get it out.
You can try but it will be very very close. |

It's too packed to get to the compressor from the top. May need to access it from the bottom.
Even so, you'd still need to remove the compressor fully from the engine bay to work on it. A big vise to hold the compressor in place would be good while you work on the internals. |
