I bought a used XC90 a year ago and its been doing great. I dropped it off to have it inspected and when I picked it up, suddenly the gear stick won't stay in Drive. It just flops over to manual.

It was fine before I dropped it off but the mechanic swears that it was that way from the moment he sat in it. Was it ready to do this all along or is the guy lying to me and they did something?

No he's not lying. Saw quite a few of the Geartronic gates fail just like that. There are two curved arms (like in a door latch) made of plastic with a spring betwqeen them and a small piece breaks off releasing the spring tension so the jaws do not hold the shift shaft in the 'normal' position. No matter what anyone does you can not cause this too happen yourself ... it just happens.
Most failed while under warranty so I replaced the whole shifter mechanism. It's not expensive and you only need to remove the center console to replace the entire unit .... just don't break the ribbon cable for the GSM.
