Hi!

I'm considering taking posession of my friends old XC70, but the car has a problem that I thought I'd ask for your input on.
It smokes like crazy no matter if it's idling or being revved, and I'm talking about smoking of the kind that covers the entire neighborhood in a matter of minutes. The oil disappears at quite a fast pace (about half a liter in less than an hour). I checked the plugs and the strange thing is that they do not have any visible indications of oil being burnt (and they all look the same, so I don't think the problem is with valve seals, rings or anything like that). Normally the turbo would be the place to start looking, but the previous owner had it replaced when this problem started. It looks a bit like the car 20 seconds into this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ld8xg8ilZss.
Any thoughts?

check the pcv system for blockages, if the crankcase oil pressure is high it could well be blowing past the seals

Hi Grendel, and thank you for your reply!

What seals are you referring to? Since blown cam/crank seals don't cause smoking I'll assume that you're talking about the seal(s) on the turbo?
Do you think replacing the PCV system might help fix the problem, or am I too late? And what other things should I do/have a look at if crankcase pressure indeed is the problem?

Thanks for taking the time!

if you take out your dipstick and it puffs out at you, then you have positive crankcase pressure, which usually indicates a blocked (either fully or partially PCV system) if the crankcase is pressured it will force oil past seals, you may be able to cure it by cleaning the pcv but no guarantee, its worth a try at least, as if you reduce the smoke and oil consumption, you have a bit more time to consider whether the seals need replacing. the pcv system can probably be cleaned, i know you can get replacement kits, but maybe just clearing through the tubes to remove blockages might be an indication of what is needed.

Hi again!

I haven't gotten around to doing the dipstick test or the "glove on oil filler" test yet, but I'm pretty confident that smoke will billow out from either.
Seems like the way forward will be to inspect/clean/replace the PCV system and just see what happens.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
