I have a 1989 Ford Mustang (I know, you guys are probly wondering what I m doing here), but heres the thing, its a 2.3L SOHC (great for gas, but that whole 88hp throws u back in to that seat way to much*thats sarcasm*), and i the poeple at the mustang forums keep telling me to go with a V8, but V8s are expensive (not only for the gas and swap, but for the stuff like tires, and speeding tickets) and i dont have a lot of money. However, i have haird of putting a Volvo head on to my block, making it DOHC, I dont know wich head though (I beleive it is the B234 head, but were would i pick up just the head, I cant find them), and then when i get a holed of it, what all im i going to have to do (I really wouldnt be so conserned about it, but when your 16/17 year old naighbor can beat u with a Plymoth Neon, that only had a 1.8L SOHC, and the dude is compleate domestic ricer, it gets to u)

Thanks
Micah Callahan

I think for the money u would spend anyway, it would be easier to get the V8. But I dont know which head would fit anyway.

I agree. I like the idea of modding, but not to THAT extent...

This is sorta like the N/A Volvo guys who want to turbo their N/A. They don't realize how much time, money, effort, and proper tuning it takes to make it come true.

It is honestly cheaper to buy a turboed Volvo then to turbo a N/A Volvo.

well from what i under stand from the research that i have done, and how the time line shows up with Ford and Volvo, the B230 Turbo motors (the way it sounds and looks is convensing, the only thing that is differant is that i dont think the B230 turbo motors were duel plug motors), but keeping the for would mean that i wouldnt have to chang the drivetrain, feul pump, ecu, wiring harness, dash gages, and something else that i cant think of right now. But keeping it a four cylender, i be able to keep most everything (unless they were duel plugs, then the wiring harness and the ecu)

And also the SVO Mustangs were known for beating the V8 Mustangs

Sorry you dont like the answers :P

SVO's were also turbocharged...So even if u got a DOHC head to fit your 2.3L, dont think its gonna run like and SVO or a V8. Which if thats what you're looking for, you have do all the other additional mods anyway.

Unless your goal is to really be different.... then I agree with those that said put a V8 in it. The 5.0 in my Volvo came out of a wrecked 2000 Ford SUV. The total package was less than a thousand dollars. The wrecked SUV had 50K miles on it at the time. Add an AODE transmission and I believe you have the engine and trans for under $1500.00. The difficult part of the swap woud be the electronics, but if you can make a Volvo to Ford modification then you can make the
electronics work. Oh, I almost forgot...being good and keeping my foot out of the motor, with 3:73 gears, and an AOD....I get 19.2 miles per gallon.

Haven't seen it done yet but would love to see one that is done.

It would have to be a 16 valve head. That is the only twin cam red engine.

The white engines are all twin cam but that is newer.

I believe the 16v engine is a B204 and B234 but I might be wrong.

Haven't messed with to many 16v engines.

There is alot of people that put those heads on the B230 engines and turbo them and they are really fast cars.

my self included. I own the marine 16v engine.
its a 2.5 liter redblock with the 16v twin cam head.

and your right, they came to the states as b234's but in Italy there where b204GT's that came turbo charged

I can sell anyone here a 16v head for $300ish

Switching to the Volvo DOHC will take lots of machine work. I say go turbo. It would be cheaper to fins a 2.3 turbo and just swap it in then to convert your n/a to turbo IMO. The 4 banger will be better on gas and still be quick. Go find a 87-88 turbocoupe....they are intercooled and good for 200hp stock. Theres lots of info and lots of people making huge power out of the 2.3 turbo. Check out turboford.net I was planning on swapping the 2.3 turbo into my ranger....now im thinking of building my motor to handle boost and keeping my odb II. My dual plug head flows way better then the turbo head....plus the wring woul be a pain :P.

But also remember you are young. I've got the 2.3 n/a in my ranger....slow as crap..i drove that threw college working 2 jobs to pay off. It wan't until i was 22 that i bought the motor and i still don't have it in yet. It'll take time. Once you get used to it it's not too bad being slow :gitara:

you can always go for a supercharger. a paxton or a magnusson underhood blower. there are conversion kits out there, or just dump the car and get an older 5.0 take off the badges and put on the 2.3 badge. then go out and look for him.
