In talking to people that have the 2.9L non Turbo's, 28 mpg highway seems about average. The Twin Turbo's are in the high 26's low 27's highway. 20 mpg city seems to be about average for both engines. Let me add where you live matters on the actual mileage that you will get with the car. Since Indiana is pretty flat you should be on the high side of the mileage figures. Also how you drive will also influence your fuel mileage. My 97 960 has the same I6 24 valve motor and the difference between running the hills around western Pa and northern WVa and running I-95 south along the coast of NC, SC and Ga is almost 2.5 mpg better.
The new 2.5L is suppose to be getting in the low thirties on the highway.
Stay away from any 1999-2000 S80's. They have major new design problems that are never ending nightmares. The 2002 and up S80's are outstanding cars.

I find that I normally get about 15 in the city (tampa fl ) and about 23 or 24 on the interstates, any advice on what I can do to raise this figure? I always use premium 93 octane rating fuel and to the best of my knowlegde have no leaks in the exhaust etc..
do you think changing the air filter will help this at all?
Thanks

Hi..Gas mileage will depend on your driving habits.
I have a 1999 Volvo S80 2.9L Non-Turbo with 275,000 Km's on it (171,000 Miles).
On the Highway, with Cruise set at 110 Kmh (68.75 mph) I usually get 7.9L/100Km(1.74 Gallons/62.5 Miles =35.9 mpg).
In town i get 12.5L/100Km(2.75/62.5 Miles = 22.73 mpg).
These numbers are off my trip computer and seem fairly accurate.
Also, the Octane rating doesnt really make any difference in performance unless you happen to be driving a Ferrari or fighter jet.The only difference is the price.
Here in Ontario the lowest Octane you can buy is 87 and its been proven there is no performance boost gained by using higher octane.
The most common type of octane rating worldwide is the Research Octane Number (RON). There is another type of octane rating, called Motor Octane Number (MON) or the aviation lean octane rating, which is a better measure of how the fuel behaves when under load.Depending on the composition of the fuel, the MON of a modern gasoline will be about 8 to 10 points lower than the RON.
In most countries (including all of Europe and Australia) the "headline" octane that would be shown on the pump is the RON, but in the United States, Canada and some other countries the headline number is the average of the RON and the MON, sometimes called the Anti-Knock Index (AKI), Road Octane Number (RdON), Pump Octane Number (PON), or (R+M)/2. Because of the 8 to 10 point difference noted above, this means that the octane in the United States will be about 4 to 5 points lower than the same fuel elsewhere: 87 octane fuel, the "regular" gasoline in the US and Canada, would be 91-92 in Europe

From what I gather from friends on Ottawa, the traffic situation there isnt anythng remotely close to here in Tampa... sometimes I just dont feel to drive around the city, so many traffic lights, bad (and old) drivers, traffic etc... I STILL dont see why my mpg should be so low though.... maybe itl improve after I change all my filters (which I was planning to do anyway)

Re my driving habits, i thrash the car from time to time, but definitely not on a regular basis to show such low gas mileage

Some of the stuff above you quote sounds reasonable and appears you've done considable research...Although some of the stuff I will disagree with you..One is the claim about no performance gain by using higher octane fuel...I travel a bit between southern arizona and Palm Springs, Ca..City to City is about 415 miles..
I'll consistently get 3/4 more miles per gallon usng the 91 octane vs the 87 octane
fuel...Have tested this more than just a couple of times and do not use any particular named Oil Company gas...I'll fill up wherever it is the lowest cost...
Your last sentence about the differerent octane ratings in the US and Europe is
enlighting, although would appreciate hearing from some of the forum members in Europe concerning this....My Volvo is the 2.9L Turbo and the non Turbo engine maybe not require or run differently using the 87/91 octane fuel..I only know how my own vehicle performs...

I saw the original post for this thread was made back in '06, but I guess better late than never. I have an '01 S80 with the 2.9 (non-turbo). In the city, I'll do 18-20 on average, and on the Highway, 24-29 is very common. I always make sure my tires are inflated properly and that I run a can of fuel system cleaner at least once a month. That generally keeps her purring.
