I just bought a '96 volvo 850 glt with 140k on the odometer. Everything runs perfectly and the car is overall in great condition. However there is one issue that I am concerned with. This has happened three times so far and each time it has happened I was travelling at a slow speed comming to a stop. When it happened it was raining pretty badly and the roads were soaked. This happened yesterday and has not happened today (the weather is clear and dry now). Could this be due to warped rotors or the inclement weather conditions. Any feedback would be appriciated. Thank you.

Either warped rotors, or worn brake pads.

Thank's I'll have then checked out. The brake pads are probably fine since the car was just inspected 4 days ago. What rotors would you reccomend?

Could have also been the ABS working. Was the Brake pedal shaking and did you hear like a buzzing?

The entire vehicle was shaking, pretty violently I might add.

Violently...?

Can you tell if there was an indication that it was the ABS, as in Tech's suggestion? Does it happen ALL the time?

I've had the car for about a week now and have put roughly 250 miles on the car. This has happend only twice and it was raining very badly during the times that it happened. i.e. at one point the rotors were probably partly submurged. However, the shaking did not occur at this point as i gassed the car to protect the exhaust. The shaking only occured while comming to a final stop around 5 mph later in the day after comming off of the expressway and stopping at a red light. There was no indication to my knowlege of the abs light ever comming on.

non original pads??????
many owners report 3rd party pads as been fine in the dry but dire in the wet. I think some brands actually absorbe some water which could give the sympoms you have.

okay before i take my car to the shop i'd like a final confirmation ( the best one can give as i know your answer is only based on my description) on wether or not the rotors are the problem.

recently the problem with the car rumbling while stopping at low speeds has gotten much worse and occurs almost every time i come to a stop. when i stop i feel the rumbling comming from the back hear it comming from the back and do not feel the shaking in the steering wheel. I'm guessing rear rotors. could it still be possible that the front rotors are shot also?

also. what do you people think of buying oem parts from ebay or something equivalent where i can get a much cheaper price. my mechanic is quoting the rotors at $ 100 a piece and 45$ per rotor for labor. do you think it would be possible for me to replace the rotors or is it a very intensive procedeure.

thank you for your help

I still think warped rotors. Hope I am wrong.

If you are well-inclined to do things yourself, changing the rotors is a good DIY thing. There are many online guides for this. Just be careful when you do, and make sure you do it right.

(At one time, someone left the caliper hanging by the rubber brake hose for a whole morning before fitting the newly purchased rotors and found that the brakes don't work! BANG! Read: Rubber brake hose gave way, bled when brake was depressed. And brake not employable.)

:)
Didn't mean to scare you.

I still say Rotors as well.

If the steering wheel isn't shaking then most likely not the front.
