The 1989 740 may be different, but on a 1992 740 we had, there was a rubber plug on the front of the instrument cluster. Under this was the reset button, and all you need to do was press it with a pen to reset the service light timer. On later 240s there is a lever behind the speedo that you pull on to reset the service light.

oh woops...thought he meant check engine light.

yes on the 89 ( like mine ) its a rubber plug.

the reset on my "91 740 is on the dash, to the left below the speedo..pop off the rubber gromet if there is one and push the button to reset....they are set, i think, to come on every 5,000 miles, mine does anyway :460:
