Hello, new to this sort of thing but just had to ask a question.

I have a V50 SE Sport (05) and have today (for the second time) had the immobiliser kick in and my car refuse to start. The display reads ‘steering failure’ ‘immobiliser’ ‘book service’ or something like that. Just wondering if anyone else had experience anything similar or heard of it before.

Thanks.

Hi,

I have a V50 T5 2005. I had an opposite issue as yours. My key refused to come out from the ignition lock and a message got displayed saying something like "Immobiliser enabled. Check manual.".

The car was driving fine, I could start and stop the engine, however, the key was not coming out. I drove to the dealer where they changed the ignition lock.

I didn't have any issues since ... however it doesn't mean it's over :-)

Take care.

Today I had the exact same problem as you benedict. The steering locked and the car would not start. The V50 is just two months old and is already back at the workshop!

The towtruck drivers who picked the car up said they had seen another V50 with the same problem just one week ago. Meanwhile the dealership service guys claimed they'd never seen this issue before.

Is your V50 running properly now? What part(s) did they fix/replace? I'm still waiting to hear from the dealership.

Thanks

I had exactly the same problem yesterday. My V50 SE Sport is 3 months old.

I had hope it was just a case of finding a reset button....

In my case it ended up being a faulty steering component. The workshop replaced the part and let's hope it doesn't happen again. It's not a good thing if you can't even lock and leave your car with the confidence that it will be drivable when you return.

It happened to me 6 hrs after I drove away from the dealership with a V50 AWD!
I received the same answer: faulty ignition start & steering sensors...

I'm a tech for a local dealer and can help. If you are getting the immobilizer message it is due to a bad SCU, Start Control Unit. The SCU is actually the ignition switch on these cars. Volvo is aware of this problem and has released and updated SCU to solve the problem. If your steering wheel becomes locked it is due to a failed column lock. they will get stuck in the locked position and have to be replaced. Volvo has also released an updated lock to fix the problem.

Thanks for you input!
I did not get a direct answer from the dealership when I ask about the fix for this problem -new and improved parts or just replaced with the same components and hoping that it was just a bad batch...
