Well, yesterday took a 1995 960 to my Volvo dealer and had it surveyed. Biggest problem is the steering rack is leaking and will not pass safety inspection plus a batch of "little" things, i.e. headlight wiper motor, missing air guides, a couple of dash bulbs, broken electric seat switch panels, 1 rear door lock not working, rear rotors are burnt and a front 1 grooved but none enough that the dealer says they should be attacked. Estimate about $2,000 to fix all so negotiated a "as-is price". The dealer was going to find a used rack, but for the cost I'd rather go with new.

Car is white with light gray interior, leather seats are all really in good condition with only the driver's side startign to show Volvo leather syndrome, i.e. cracking and discoloration. I think with some good applications of conditioner I can keep that to a minimum. The radio is a cassette with 2 regular controls, volume and tuning. All I've seen have the single volume control. Will need to either changeout for a CD unit or somehow figure out how to add an outboard CD. Unlike my 940 readio this 1 sounds decent with no issues.

It does have non-factory wheels from ROH that are wide and use low profile tires makeing the ride a bit harsh. Look good but, may change them out for something more suited for middle-aged persons looking for quiet and smooth ride.

When I took it in for the survey, immediately after another 960 rolled in behind it. A rather good looking lady walked into the service area and announced she wanted to by the 960 with the dealer plates. Guess she thought it was Volvo's. She is a single person (anyone lookng) and she wants another white 960 in excellent condition that has less miles; hers stands with 400,000 miles (was a US car). Mine only has 213,000 si it was a child. Her rationale for the 2nd car is that with the miles on hers she figures at some point it will need to go to the hereafter and she loves it so much she wants to get another now and store it for that day. I know where there are 2 gray 960s, 1 with only 110,000 kilometes on it but, she wants white. Yes, I know I should have looked at the gray but even with low mileage, it did not turn my ticker. The other gray has about the same mileage as the 1 I bought.

Question: The tranmission on the 940 has an O.D. lockout. The 960 does not have this feature. It does have D, 3, L. Is the 3 position the same as the O.D. lockout on the 940? Around town I use the lockout rather than lugging the engine and would like to do the same with the 960.

The "3" on your shifter will force the car into third. I'm not sure if overdrive only caps the shifting at 3rd (eg. it can use 1,2 and 3) or if it puts it only into 3rd.
