If it is clicking that is the A/C clutch switching on and off. This happens when the refrigerant is getting low, so it may just need a recharge of R12 (Freon) or R134. If the A/C clutch is very loud, it could be on the way out. These can be replaced without replacing the compressor - it's simple and can be done by someone with basic mechanic skill.
After recharging it would be smart to get the A/C tech to check your system for leaks.

What about the whining? Of course, mine doesn't work, so I guess it's pointless.

If your compressor is whining, it probably means it has a bearing on the way out.

Would that affect the system's performance? Mine blows cool, but not cold.

I have a related question-- my a/c also works, not the coldest, but it works, but when the compressor kicks on there is a sort of grinding noise or dry scraping noise that manifests, for the duration of the "on" cycle of the compressor. Is this something I can repair? Or is it replace compressor time?[SIZE=7]

isolate the noise by simple test

open bonnet and listen to A/C when in full operation

then turn it off inside and check that the clutch disengaged

is the noise still there?

that will tell you if it is clutch, seal or bearings, but at 190,000 you are probably looking at a comp at end of life
