i have a hu850 6 disk cd changer. i had six disks loaded when it got a error message. i got all the disks out except 1 and 3. the system wouldnt eject or play or load anymore. i have had the unit replaced at the dealer under warranty, but they are saying not to use backups or copies in the unit as they are not compatible and would result in me having to replace the unit again within 3 months.
i find this bizarre as all my audio equipment plays backups with no problems. even a £39,99 stereo.
i asked the dealer if this was writtn down or notifications made by volvo anywhere, his reply was NO, and it was volvo telling the dealers to inform the client.
well i wished they would of informed me before i bought the car.
does anyone have any info on this or is it the dealer tslking bull.
i dont want to carry my cd collection around with me in the car.
any help would be appreiciated. thanks

i'd say there scapegoating on burnable cd's. it is not a problem with the disc. the only problem ever had with burnt cd's, is that some cd players made in the early 90s cant read em. and thats it

thats what i thought. this hu850 is suppose to be a high end multi cd player. i avoid using labbled disks. i always use non printable disks. never had a problem till i got the volvo. who can i get confirmation from ?. i get a sneaky feeling if i use writable disks and it gets stuck again then thell try and get out of the warranty, leaving me high and dry.

i'd try going to another dealership if they tried that scapegoat again. and yes, never use discs with stuck-on labels. the ones you can print on are alright, as long as they don't get wet and the label starts to peel, or the new lightscribe gimmicks that HP makes. i find the old felt pen works just fine.

the problem you had...not getting them out, is a mechanical failure of the stereo. there is no way a burnt cd could jam it up, they are the exact same specs as regular ones with a few obvious differences - ones writable. i'm pretty sure some blank cd manufacturers would back that up...

thats exactly what i thought till the dealer said otherwise. and yes i only ust the plain ones and write with felt tip.
anyhow ive written directly to volvo asking them for confirmation either way, so when and if i get a reply ill post it here. thanks for your input.

just had a phone call from the volvo customer relations department.
they say it is perfectly ok to use copied or backup disks in the unit and the dealer was wrong to say what they did.
they just asked me to avoid using disks with sticky labels has these could come loose and stick inside the player.
thankyou volvo, i can now listen to my collection again. :)

As an owner of a 2005 Volvo S60 R w/ hu850 I have experienced similar problems with burnt cd's where 95% of them do not play and even the one's that do might play a song or two and eventually I get a "CD Error" message. All retail CD'S play okay though. Has anyone been able to get a burnt CD to play okay in this shi#t! factory system?

Hello

I'm a very happy recent owner of an S60 of july 2005 with an HU850. I noticed the same "CD ERROR" with most of my burnt CDs, ans with a lot of originals one. I phone to my Volvo garage, and they told me not to load burnt CDs, cause it will damage the HU850.
Is there any work around ?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Yes, the workaround is to try playing older 650md CD's...
