Hi all,

I'm going to be buying a Range Rover within the next few weeks. I'm wondering if I should go for the 2.5Tdi or the 4.0L V8 petrol with an LPG conversion.
I want one for all the towing we do, but I'd like some oomph when I'm not towing.

I'm sure you get cheaper road tax in the U.K. for LPG converted cars, also LPG cars are exempt from congestion charges.

But will a 4.0L LPG give a similar number of miles per £ as the 2.5 Tdi?

Stu.

:cat: Hi there I have a nut leftover.

For what my two cents is worth to you-go with the diesel. More mechanics know what they are doing with a diesel engine than they do with LPG. I'll bet you find far more petrol stations with diesel than you do with LPG spread throughout the country.

Now let's see what the experts say :P

Thanks for the fast response Aukland!!

LPG is becoming more widely available over here. So that shouldn't be a prob'.
I think if the LPG plays up only a certified (not mentaly) LPG tech' can mess around with it.

The only reason I was thinking LPG is 'cause I don't want to feel as though I'm driving around in a van, + the diesels are sluggish.

congratulations. you hit the jackpot. i've been looking at buying one myself and am an avid land rover nut. the 4.0 v8 is more reliable than the 4.6 which suffered head gasket failures. the 2.5 tdi was a great engine in the discovery, but dire in the big range rover. i have the power, economy and other stats here:
4.0 v8 max 116mph 190bhp 236 lb ft 12-22 mpg
2.5 td max 105 mph 134bhp 199 lb ft 22-32 mpg
standard conversion for lpg is double the fuel economy since the gas is half price, so therefore 22 to 44mpg for equivilant cost in petrol. you can gas convert the diesel, but with a grunting v8 under the bonnet who wants one? i'd go for the 4.0, preferable the vogue with the air suspension and all the toys. just check they all work, the suspension self levels when still and the car doesn't sink when the engines off. take someone along who knows range rovers inside out as they are wonderful cars, but a real money pit if they go wrong.

Cheers for that mong man, looks like the 4.0V8 wins.
