I saw a post a little while ago, but now I can't find it. A guy was asking about a problem he was having refueling. I believe, that he said his tank was acting like it was full. He would try to pump gas, but the pump would stop, and he would top off even when his tank wasnt full.

Today I get gas, my tank was close to E. I starty fueling up, and the handled jumps off the notch as if my tanks full. I try again, same thing. So then I just try to stand there and hold it. But then I noticed gas pouring unto the ground from somewhere in the tire well. And I was topping of, but I KNOW my car didnt have any gas. SO I had to fuel slowly, then suddenly the problem went away. Once I'd pumped $10.00 in, I was able to place the handle back on the latch and it fueled normally.

Anyone know what this could be? I've got to be honest, this was the scariest thing to happen to me to date. I'm at a loss

Check the fuel tank breather system first - it could be blocked.

Remembering that I'm a V40 man myself, you may wish to take the following on advisement! I'm assuming that you are 100% sure that the fuel gauge sender unit is OK & that the tank is indeed nearly empty when you begin to fuel the car & to your surprise the pump cut-out operates.

First off you should run the fuel down as low as possible, so that it's easier to drain the tank. Working in a well ventilated area (petrol/fumes!), once you've made sure you have the radio code, disconnect the battery earth lead & drain the remainder of the fuel in the tank into a suitable/safe container. Easiest way is to remove the petrol cap & disconnect the rear-most fuel line from the fuel filter. Slow draining process though!

There will probably be an earth lead somewhere on the back of the filler neck - disconnect it. There is probably a fuel drip tray around the filler neck - on the V40 it's kind of a push fit but check for clips or screws then gently pull it off & remove any drain hose attached beneath it.

You should now see some bolt heads that were hidden by the drip tray - remove these bolts.

Next you'll need to get under the car, so once you've chocked the front wheels then raised & supported the back of your car, get under & remove any further bolts holding the filler pipe in place. Undo all hose clips and remove the filler & breather pipes.

Personally, I would dispose of the drained fuel safely rather than return it to the tank, since it may well contain a high level of sedement from the bottom of the tank. Refill with some fresh fuel that you've pumped into a suitable clean gas can.

Good luck & please do let us know how you get on.

BB
