Just a little information on Comprehensive Motor Vehicle Insurance....


As we are in the process of looking at the 850 wagon, thought it important to check the cost of insurance. So checked with our normal insurer. Most vehicles that I have checked out are around $400 - $500. So when the quote came back at $868 I almost fell off my chair. But thought this was way too much so thought I would shop around.

Next phone call yielded $624

Next Phone call $371.

What a difference. The lesson is to phone around. My brother also remarked that when he was looking a number of years ago at the volvo 850 sedan the salesman said that volvo offer there own insurance due to the rediculous costs some insurers were putting on one of the safest cars on the road.

Any other experiences with insurances out there.

In my country the best deal I could find was a comprehensive insurance with 500 deductible for my 96 850 sedan was 580 USD.

The price in some companies reached 1500. Insurance companies don't like Volvo's here so instead of saying they won't accept the car, they simply rip you off.

usually insurance rates in US are based on:

- age (differs if you are over 25 or under) (makes a huge difference)
- single/married (makes a huge difference)
- number of ppl staying in your house
- color of the car (supposedly red is the worst color drivers who prefer this color drive more recklessly)
- make n model of the car
- anti-theft; seat belts; ABS
- and most importantly the address where the car is parked (makes a huge difference)

Here in my insurance company it's based on:
- car market value
- imported or domestic (spares for imports cost 3 or 4 times more)
- where the car is parked most of the time
- age of the main driver
- satellite tracking system / no tracking system
- alarm/no alarm
- married/single
- how many years you have had the same insurance policy without accidents
- how long the main driver has had his/her drivers license
- ABS/airbag/traction control (this is considered, but does not make the price vary too much)
