I have 2005 V50 AWD with manual transmission and 10,000 miles. I don't know my way around an engine. Here's the problem. Driving with air conditioning on. Suddenly foul chemical smell detected in the car and smoke coming from under the hood. Pulled over and opened hood. Large hose disconnected from fan in front of engine. Reconnected as best I could. Turned off air conditioning. No warning lights appeared and enngine temp remained in normal range. I finished driving. I would welcome thoughts on what happened before I bring car to be sericed.

Thanks.

I too have a chemical smell and smoke coming from the hood. It doesn't seem to be the air conditioning though. I have a manual V50 and when I am on a hill balancing the car or if I rev the engine a little too much a terrible smell comes pouring into the car and the engine starts smoking. I brought it in twice to Volvo. the First time they told me they could not reproduce the problem so I thought it was maybe a one time thing. The second time they said it was normal and I shouldn't worry about it. Well, now I'm worried. Today my pregant wife and our 2 year old daughter were in the car and it happened again. She was stuck in traffic and people were telling her that the car was on fire. She told me that the smell was unbearable and had to let the car air out. I'm very worried about what chemicals they were both breathing in. My daughter has since thrown up tonight. You can bet Volvo is going to hear about it tomorrow when I go in.
