I've been wondering what everyone's general stance is on using the parking brake regularly. I've heard some vehicles benefit from using it (i've heard it was recommended with older Maximas) but I haven't heard much about that from Volvo. I drive and park on flat surfaces most of the time, but even say in the garage I have noticed that going from park to reverse is smoother when I use it.

Any recommendations? Thanks!

I have a 5 speed 2.4i so the parking break is a must. My opinion is, even if it an automatic...it is there, use it. Its like not using turn signals, why not use them.

I always use it, maunal or auto. My wife has an automatic, and its easier to shift out of park when on an incline. It just seems it would be better for the trans in that case.

Manual or auto, I cant see how it would hurt...

Hi. I know how it could hurt. I just had my tires replaced on an S70 AWD 1999. The mechanic, who has worked on nothing but Volvos for 35 years said that he had trouble when he was aligning the back wheels. It turns out the parking brake was stuck "on" or "applied" on the back wheels, at least partially. He said that these cars definitely have a problem with the emergency brake cables rusting up and sticking. He recommended never to use the brake. We only used it rarely.

Just some food for thought,
bushka

bushka, I can understand your point...but I would rather replace brakes than an entire vehicle. Or even worse, if your car rolls down a hill it could hit something else, or someone. I will take my chances using the parking brake.

Agreed...besides, if they do have a problem rusting, it would stand to reason that using it on a regular basis would help prevent it from sticking.

:cat: Hi there bushka.

For what my two cents is worth-I only use the hand brake if parking on an incline. Otherwise, just using Park is OK.

I have heard that if you use your hand brake, the brake pads can pressurise dust into the rotors, thus leaving the rotors pitted.

The other rumour I heard is that if you leave the hand brake on for long periods, the pads can leave an impression on the rotors.

Over to you. :haha:

Cheers :right:

Use the parking brake everytime you park, as we do in the UK and you won't have a problem with them sticking, plus its the safest option by far. The only time I've ever had a stuck parkie was on a 1972 VW camper when it had stood in the rain for a week which merely required a tap from a lump hammer, but that was the least of my problems with that vehicle!

Agree, use it every time. By doing so you're not only using a manufacturer fitted safety device (we drive Volvos!), but you're also keeping the mechanism from seizing.

The pressure applied on the rear pads by the parking brake is less than the hydraulic pressure applied when you use the servo assisted brake pedal.
