Just wanted to say hi I have just bought a 1998 Volvo v40 1.9 cd turbo diesel this is my second car as I own a Mercedes CLK convertible which is a weekend car.

I just wanted to know if there is anyone on the forum who owns a diesel v40 turbo as I have a few questions :

1. Does your Gearstick have play even when in gear?
2. Is it normal on Volvos to have a stiff Clutch
3. Turbo I don't here a wizz from the turbo and the pickup is really slow is that normal? Can I get this checked or was there different versions of turbo diesel and how do I check mine?

Thankyou in advance

Hi there. I have just purchased a 1997 petrol V40 and had the same problem with the gear lever - just had the bushes replaced (gear box end) and it has solved the problem - £5 for the bushes + 1/2 hour labour. Apparently this is a common issue as the nylon bushes wear out. Now to replace my worn front suspension bushes. Hmmmmm...

Yup, as pphilpot says, for some reason loose/sloppy gear thing seems to be a trait. Having the gear selector bushes replaced sometimes tightens-up the gear change & helps a bit.

“Sloppy” movement in gear lever on turbo & GDI models can be caused by rubber in the ends of the selector cables. When it gets old it gets brittle and falls out. Other models have a single rod instead. Not sure about diesel models.

I've driven several Volvos & none of them had a particularly stiff clutch - 340 & 440 weren't feather light actions, but not "heavy".

If you can't hear the turbo "whistle" when revving the engine with the bonnet open then maybe get the turbo checked.
