Pic' was taken with the works camera, the date has never been set.

I work for Network Rail on the rapid response team, we had to walk through the field to get to the track.

As soon as we got out of the van these cows came running over to us.

Thought it'd be rude to ignore them.

Definatly not a strange hobby.

There's a voltage feed and an insulated joint every so far on each rail, the voltage holds a relay energised. When the relay is energised the signalman gets a track circuit clear indication on his control panel. Meaning no train on that track circuit.
A train will short the voltage via the train axle, dropping the relay, and giving the signaller an occupied indication.

Leaves on the rail causes high resistance, between the train wheels and the rail head. Which can lead to a train becoming undetected, and disappearing from the signallers panel.

This means that the signaller could set a route for another train, across the path of the one that disappeared from his panel. Or the signal behind the train fails to show red.

Not good!!!

Probably just end up with more delays caused by dung on the line.
