My car will not blow any air for about 15 mins after starting on hot days. The dealer thought that this was a problem with the bellows. They replaced those & returned my car. This did not fix my problem.

I took my car back and left it for 4 more days. They said that they could not reproduce the problem that I explained to them. I asked them to park my car in the sun for a day, and I would come up and start my car to see if it happened. When I started it, the air didnt blow. The mechanic was looking at all the vents and seemed to be very confused. He said he had never seen this before, but would take it back and try to isolate the problem.

The service manager said that they ordered a part and had installed it. They are waiting to see if it works. They would not tell me what part they ordered.

I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what the ultimate solution was for you?

5/8/06 update: I picked up my car again last thursday, and they told me to watch it over the weekend to see if the problem was fixed. They told me they replaced a CHECK VALVE and that when they tested it, the problem was better, but not fixed.

They now have my car for the 3rd time, and they said that the mechanic forman was going to work on my car personally. They are going to take everything they've done apart and put it back to see if that was a problem.

5/22/06 update: Today, it got around 90*f ... and it turns out that the problem is not better, but in fact is WORSE than it was originally. I am getting very frustrated as it has been over a month now. I think that I've officially driven every loaner that they have at the dealer. I took the car back with the intention of having them print out my service history and going to another shop for a second oppinion, but they sweet talked me into leaving the car again.

At this point, they have replaced my bellows, the check valve, my radiator (b/c it died last week) my thermostat, hoses, and a slew of lightbulbs - none of which have worked, all of which have drained my wallet.

I'm still hoping for any suggestions you might have. Thanks.

My 1998 S90 has the same air conditioning problem. I have not had it to the dealer yet. Any suggestions?

There are a couple of possibilities here. If the fan is not blowing out air or cuts out, I suspect the switch is defective/worn. When blower motors start failing, they generally get squeeky loud and you can hear it in the cabin of the vehicle.

Second, I would eliminate the obvious...does the fan blow in all other setting besides a/c? If it does, I would suspect the relay on the A/C to be either shorted out/dying.

On a previous Swedish car I owned(name unmentioned here), the temp sensor gauge went out and the fan stopped blowing at any setting. These are generally located left of the blower motor under the cowl facing the front windshiel. Very easy to replace and relatively inexpensive. Most yards have them for $20. The look like a silver set of prongs about five inches in length.

Hope this helps

Thanks! I will suggest that my dealer replace the temp sensor gauge -or show him this forum printout.
The fan never quits blowing, the air just quits coming into the car. The cool ac air comes slightly out of the floor vents then. It will then sometimes blow into the car again after about 10 minutes. Seems to depend on how hot the weather is.

I did take the car to the dealer but of course the weather cooled down so they could not reproduce the problem. All they did was refill the AC (which had just been done).

I was able to take my car to the dealer when the AC was not blowing into the cabin of the car. The new diagnosis is to replace the main AC Control Module as they seemed to think it is an electronics problem. Since this would entail taking apart the dash, the estimate is $1000.00. Does this sound like it would fix this problem, A bit expensive!
Please let me know this control module controls?

Are you sure its a 1996....From my understanding of the S90, they didnt make them in 1996....only 1997 & 1998. Maybe the model is a different one or you have the year wrong.

My S90 had a crazy problem. The temp gage would go crazy for a while and the AC would cut out. After a new temp sensor life is back to ice cold again!
Maybe look into replacing the engine's temp sensor?

My 98 S90 is having similar problems with the AC. The first day it happened the temp. read that is was 134 F. I almost believed it here in Phoenix on the highway, but the manual says that the temp is a mix of the ambient temp as well as the engine temp, but it was not doing that in winter. Anyway, the fan keeps blowing, but the AC kicks off. The first day it went about 10 miles and quit, then of course my husband drove it to work 20 miles to check it out(he is a heavy engine diesel mechanic) and he said it was ice cold all the way to work and all the way home. They checked it out at work and found that is had perfect pressure for refrigerant levels. The AC guy said he thought the gap for the clutch on the compressor looked to be too big. But this guy is not a Volvo specialist. I drove it today, it made it 4 miles before kicking off, then on the way home, only 2 miles. Apparently this car is NOT dealing with the combination of global warming plus AZ heat. Can a clutch be replaced without replacing the whole compressor? Should I just start with replacing the temp sensor as it appears others have had success with this? I bought the car in January and have sunk tires and struts into it and really hate to keep spending tons of money on it. It has many of the problems others have listed for this year and model. Had to replace the gear shifter after only owning it for 2 weeks--stuck in park. It clunks after turning, it shudders at stop lights once a week, the suspension is clunky at low speeds on bumpy roads, but it runs very smoothly at high speeds on the freeway. Any help is appreciated!!
