My volvo 960 (1996) has trouble starting in the morning... this is what happens. I turn on the car and it stutters to turn on. the rpm meter oscillates half way between 0 and 500 rpms really fast for about a second and then it turns off. i start it again and it works fine as if it never stuttered. this happens almost every morning and i'm getting sick of it. but it doesn't really stop there. sometimes, at random times, the car will stutter as if misfiring and then it'll go back to normal. and when i go on the gas hard from being completely stopped it doesn't go right away. it stutters like there is no power and then gradually goes. what could be wrong? i'm ignorant so please be easy with your word choice when explaining this problem to me. i JUST DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO AND ITS KILLIN ME!! thanks guys!

My 1998 S90 has the same problem. I havent woried about it because it starts fine the second time. I was told somthing changed since the car was made that caused this when gas sits in the engine. Has to do with the computer. Its annoying but I have gotten used to it.

I'll take a guess at this one. There is a "check ball" in the fuel line just in front of the main fuel pump. I would suspect that is going bad and the fuel in the line is draining back through the fuel filter when you shut the car off. That check ball (Valve) is there to keep the fuel from doing that when the pump turns off.

I checked FCPGroton and they have them for $11.50. Dealer should be around $20 for the part. I can't tell it the later 960's/S90 still had the check valves connected to the fuel pump. It may be a question to ask the parts person at your local dealer.
