Another advantage of this approach is that you get the Volvo codes, and not universal OBD2 codes that have to be translated to Volvo specific codes.

AFAIK, OBD2 is centered on emissions control and there are some error conditions that are reported only through Volvo codes (SRS for example).

This has been tested by a user here and it works fine.

I have also found a really cheap code reader from harbor freight for 50.00. Check out their site if you want a really cheap code reader..

Not for the 94. The 94 has OBDI which is the setup under the hood.

If it was OBDII then a regular scanner would be pretty cheap.

i tried this out but couldn't get it to work. I'm not too familiar with electrical stuff at all. I think I might've bought the wrong stuff. I bought a very simple led (just a green light and two wires sticking out of it) and switch (plain black, no off and on even) and some cheap wire. anyway, maybe it's cause the light wasn't strong enough or i bought the wrong switch but any help or guidance you could give me would be great. Thanks a lot.

LEDs have polarity. That means that you should try inverting the cables or the LED to test both options.

Get a AA battery and use it to test the LED (one end of the LED to each battery pole).

Please post a picture of the switch.

The switch is ok. Why do you say it doesn't have on/off positions?
