In another Volvo forum someone ask why the exhaust tip is formed in the shape of a "S". I've often wondered the same thing, surely some out there knows why. The writer in the other fourm said he got better fuel milage with the "S" replaced with a straight tip. I suppose that could be up for discussion also. Any factual, actual, urban folk lore or made up reasons would make interesting reading.

From what I was told many years ago by a Volvo tech at my dealer, is Volvo put the S in the tail pipe so there would be some give. If you would back up into an object and hit the tail pipe and the S wasn't there the force would be linear. In most cases you would bend or break something in the piping between the manifold and the tail pipe. By putting the S in the pipe, it will bend and act like a spring shock absorber. This way you wouldn't tear the rear muffler from the mounts from a minor bump to the end of the tail pipe.

Thanks for answering the question millions of us have had on our mind, but no one was curious enought to ask. From a practical stand point it's a very logical reason to design it that way.

do you think it would add power to the verry turtle like properties of the 95 960, im looking for some minor options to increase power for now, but sooner more than later i hope to do the TT setup you see in my pic

Personally I don't think a chage at the tip of the exhaust would produce a measureable amount of HP gain and/or a seat of the pants feeling that indicates a modification has been made. A custom bent exhaust system with larger diameter pipe and a freer flowing muffler system might.
