Hi,is there any one can give me any advice on what might be wrong with my 1994 Volvo 940SE turbo estate.I have had the car for over 3 years and I love it.I have had very few problems with it but about 3 weeks ago I noticed large amounts of white smoke coming from the exhaust.Realy bad,you couldnt see up the street for smoke when I passed.I live in the north of Scotland so I took the car straight away down to our local car fixer. He is just a one man operation and usualy does any repairs for me.At first he thought that it was the engine but on opening the bonnet we could see smoke coming from the turbo. He admited that he new nothing about turbos but that a man he new in one of the nearby industrial units might know a bit.He returned with the man and they concluded that it was the turbo and that it was sucking in oil whick was then going into the engine causing the white smoke. So he had the turbo reconditioned, also one of the fins on the turbine was broken so the people who reconditioned the turbo replaced this as well.He then put the turbo back on the car and phoned me to come round and collect it.When I arrived I could see the white smoke was still pouring from the exhaust, after leaving it running for 15 mins it was no better and my repair man recond that the exhaust must be saturated with oil inside. He has taken the exhaust of and drained it of oil but now He says that the car will not run,It is only firing on two cylinders .He has ordered a set of plugs and leads.I hope this is all that it needs. This is costing me a fair bit at the moment which is fair enough but I am dreading that it is more than plugs and leads that it needs.Any advice that I could pass on to my repair man would be much appreciated.

Hi
Sorry to hear about the turbo woes. You describe the smoke as white rather than blue so it may be coolant rather than oil. If it's blue it is burning oil. It is quite possible that the turbo intercooler (the turbo's radiator) was filled with oil when your turbo failed. This would feed oil into the combustion chamber and would create blue smoke. Cleaning this out and the hoses that connect it to the turbo would help.
If the smoke is white, somehow coolant is getting into the combustion chambers, maybe a blown head gasket. However you don't mention that the engine overheated, making this less likely. Any oil in the coolant or water in the oil?
The fact that it is now only running on 2 cylinders is odd. I hope it's electrical.
Did the turbo boost look normal on the turbo guage?
Good luck,
