Hi Folks,

Does anyone know how to adjust the low beams (standard halogen lights) on the V50? I had the light assembly out last night and was looking for anything that looked like it was for adjustment, nothing that I could see. Help please.

My V50 low beams do not light the road well at all. When I switch on the high beams, it is like night and day, hugh difference. Does anyone else see this difference (have this problem)?

Cheers!

Hi All

I am a new member.

Had same problem with lights in my new V50. Even with tilt switch set on highest setting I was barely getting 30 metres lit in front of car on low beam. Dealer sorted it out without charge, but didn't see how they did it. Was petrified of fiddling lest I nullify the warranty.

The headlights are leveled by software only. There is NO mechanical control that will change the beam throw.

I have a same problem... took the car to the dealer and they said that it cannot be adjusted. The only adjustment that can be done is via the dashboard adjustment dial - but that is for load levelling.

Can the person that said the adjustment is done via "software" to please elaborate on that? (many thanks...)

Drove a friend's V50 (2006 mfgr plate - as mine is 2004 mfgr plate) and light seems perfect!

Strange!?

I'll forward the thread on how to adjust low bean aim to the dealer as see what they say.

I have a 2005 V50 AWD T5. The headlights are adjusted by software (perhaps more properly called "Firmware" in the onboard computer. One cannot adjust these bi-xenon headlamps mechanically. The car adjusts them on startup, load leveling included.

I have had them adjusted twice- the dealer has to connect the car to the network and download from Volvo. The firmware becomes corrupted and has to be re-installed.

The car is like a delicate laptop running Windows. Still, I enjoy it very much.

My wife's s40T5 has the bi-xenon, which are brilliant (I am assuming that the problem cars have halogens). I have them in the R, which were terrible when I first got it. Even though they are self adjusting, there is also a plastic screw on the light casing which puts the level up and down, and they improved a bit when I put them up. I'm not sure whether the s40/v50 also has that.

New Member.

Hi, I have the 1.8 V50 with standard Halogen lights.
I am having the same problem with the low beams as described above.

I had my car in the dealership yesterday for an "Alarm Service Required" message
and I asked them to adjust my lights at the same time.

The Alarm is now fixed, they they refused to adjust the headlights, telling me that they could not find anything wrong with them.

I asked them "nicely" if they could raise them slightly.

They refused....

So, I am stuck driving at night not seeing where I am going....

This not good and I am not impressed with the local Volvo Dealership..

The physical adjustment is not very apparent on these cars.

I have always been able to raise the levels on all of my previous cars but can't see
where to do this on my V50.

I can not continue to drive in the dark as they are, so is there anyone out there who can help ?

Maybe I should get some of those military style "night Vision" glasses ?

We have a 2005 S40 and the lights are so low (in the highest setting) that is dangerous to drive at night! But high beams are fine.
I came to this forum hoping I would find the solution, but so far no luck!

Tomorrow we'll start contacting some dealers to ask for a solution, I'll let you know how they reply...

I looked for a and adjustment on the light itself but could not find any.

The head lights are electronically adjusted. They will have to be serviced by an authorized Volvo dealer.

you can adjsut the normal halogens manually - if you look at the opening by the silver pins that hol dthe headlight unit in you will see a yellowish 6mm hex nut (choose the one furthest into the engine bay - towards the back of the car) - if you get a socket on these and turn them anti-clockwise you will raise the beam - simple!

Hope this helps

I have a 2005 V50 - my low beams are way too short. I live in a rural area so driving at night is quite scary. No-one has been able to fix this - the dealership adjusted it and claimed it was fixed but it has not been.
Volvo claimed they had never heard of this problem! Has anyone out there been helped?

Hi All,

I have since found the way to adjust he low beam lights (halogen fixed position and upgraded HID fixed position). Only factory HID are electronically adjusted.

There are two white adjustment knobs on each head light lense, one for vertical adjustmane and one for horizontal adjustment. They are most likely covered with a white covers that help keep the position of the adjuster locked in place (I have since removed them and don't have issues with the alignment moving). Anyway, they are quite easy to see once you know what you are looking at. If the locking covers are on, looking down on them they are white, round about 1/2" in diameter and have a hole in the center which is to allow the adjuster to pass through it. Can can adjust the beam while the lense is installed but will need an extention to the bit holder.

If you need more detail let me know.

Cheers..........................

I had the same problem

At night on low beam it was actually dangerous, I could hardly see the road ahead

Took it into Volvo and the adjusted it on the computer, apparently the system had gone wrong and once corrected it was SO much better

Initially I just thought they were rubbish headlights (even tho xenon) but once they were fixed they are brilliant - literally!
