Has anyone installed a trailer hitch on their c70 convertible? I'd like to use a hitch mounted bicycle rack on mine. Just wondering if anyone else has tried putting a hitch on their convertible.

Hi, I just installed one on my 2001 C70 this afternoon and it is pretty easy, it took me about 20 minutes, don't need to pay for it...do it yourself...I have a little problem with the wiring though, I don't have the schematic so I'll have to test each wire to make sure I plug it right...

The quickest and best solution is to buy the wiring harness from the dealer, and plug it in. The car should be set up for it. Otherwise, you will need to buy a Modulite kit that takes power for the trailer lights directly from the car's battery. Simply tapping into the signal and taillight wires will cause problems ranging from bulb out messages to possibly damaging the rear electronic module.

I discussed this with the guy who built my (custom) trailer hitch, and he strongly recommended going with the Volvo harness, even though he could have sold me an aftermarket kit.

Hi,

I too would like to do this.
Do you perhaps have a part number(s)?

Thanks!

Hi ronjon,

Did you ever get a straight answer as to mounting a hitch to your
C70? I also want to use the hitch just for my road bike. Any info
would be greatly appreciated!

Behind the right side (when viewed from the back) trunk liner you will find the connection for hitch wiring. I have a C70 Convertable with a factory hitch that I installed myself and that is where I connected for the lighting.

For C70 Convertible 1999.
I just installed the trailer hitch today. I got a new "hidden hitch" (draw-tite) on eBay for about $150 including shipping.

Installing took me 3 hours... I have no idea how these guys did it in 20 mins. Doesn't seem possible. These instructions from another post were very helpful.

I just removed the rear bumper on my 1999 C70 to install a trailer hitch and I figured this may help some others.

DO NOT remove plastic rivets on bottom of bumper.

1. Remove all of trunk lining
2. Remove 3 bolts attaching bumper to inner fender liner on each side.
3. Remove tail lights and body filler section below tail lights.
4. On the passinger side (USA) below the light there is a blue device held in place with one bolt. This need to be removed so you can disconnect a wire connected to it that goes through the bodd and to the bumper.
5. Remove tail pipe tip.
6. Remove 2 large bolts (one on each side) on bottom of bumper.
7. Slide bumper off car.

Thanks Owenmpk

This was hugely helpful. I too have a 1999 Volvo c70 convertible and was installing a draw-tite trailer hitch. I almost removed the bottom buttons before I checked online.

A couple of other things. It took me 3 hours start to finish to get this done (not 20 mins like the instructions included say)

You need a star driver for the three bolts on each side
I was able to get away with not removing the drivers side tail light. It's much harder to remove that because of the stereo and other equipment on that side. I could get it part way out by removing the passengers side tail light only which was enough to install the bolts.

Good Post!

Can you post a photo of what it looks like from the rear?

Also regarding my Volvo OEM hitch it comes with a fixed 2" ball! So no swaping out for a 1 7/8" ball. A bit over engneered if you ask me.
