Hello there. I was wondering if anyone has a clue about what's been happening with my 2004 Volvo S40.

About a dozen of times now my ignition key gets stuck after I try to turn off the engine. This happens basically at random times. I will park my car, and will be unable to pull out the ignition key. Sometimes all it takes to pull it out is to start up the car again, drive back and forth, and it will pull out. A few times I simply could not get it out no matter what. I had to leave the car with the ignition key as I left it all by itself (I covered up the wheel and everything with a blanket). The next time I tried to pull it out(hours later) it worked. In order to even lock the car I have to carry around a spare key, because you cannot lock it from inside.

I am planning to visit the dealership and ask them what is going on, but was wondering if maybe I can get some help before I go there.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like the lock barrel is going bad, so it is highly advisable to get it replaced before it fails altogether & gives you a major headache (and leaves you uninsured against theft.....)

I have the same problem, after u left the car and come back later the key can b removed.
Pain, ain't it??
All 'cos of the parking lever is not sitted in it position properly when u shift the lever to 'P'.
Mine is a 99's V40T4, it is controlled by a spring under the console, just lubricate it and make sure it is smooth, will solve the problem.
Mine so far so good.
Try it out!!!!

Turns out that this was the problem. I went to the dealership and the button on the lever was wearing down, and often did not pop out; so the system didn't rcognize the car was parked and didn't let the key eject.

Thanks for the help.

:haha: The mists have cleared - your original post didn't mention that it has an automatic tranny!

hi there! Question, I'm having trouble with the button on my transmission lever not popping out properly when I shift into park. You said you lubricated yours, but how did you do it? Did you remove the button or any part or did you just lubricate the face of the button? Thanks!
