Hi,

I am new to the forums.

I was wondering if there is anyway to tighten the handbrake and how do i do it? I have to sometimes park my new (new to me) Volvo 440 li on a hill and it doesn't sound like its going to stay there.

Thanks

John

The adjustment screw / bolt is usualy at the rear of the handbrake, access can be made on most cars by removing the ash tray mounted in the back of the centre console.

Park on level ground with car in 1st gear, turn screw / bolt clockwise about 1 turn. Pull handbrake up 4 clicks, put car in neutral. Try pushing the car.

If the car moves, engage 1st gear again release handbrake and give the adjuster bolt another turn.

Repeat untill you can't push the car with handbake pulled up 4 clicks.

+ Make sure the car will roll with handbrake fully off and in neutral.

Not familiar with 400 series, but the majority of cars hanbrakes can be adjusted this way.

Let us know how you get on.

Stu.

Pull handbrake up 6 notches, carefully chock front wheels, raise & support back of car.

Try to turn rear wheels by hand but do not put any part of yourself under car/wheels whilst doing this.

If one or both rear wheels can be turned, then you'll need to remove the heat shield from the exhaust to get access to the handbrake adjuster. Slacken off lock nut then turn adjuster gradually, until both rear wheels cannot be turned by hand.

Remember to carefully let the handbrake off while the back of the car is still raised & supported, so you can check that both rear wheels turn completely freely with handbrake released. If so & rear brakes are drums, then this is all you have to do except re-applying the handbrake & lowering the back of the car.

My old 440 1.8Li had rear drum brakes & yes, they do creak a bit on the handbrake!

Good luck.

BB
