OMG this is such a releif. I was begining to ponder the thought that I would have to take my xenons out and put my old halogens back in for state inspection. I could go to a non-volvo shop but they would still notice the bulb failure message and little orange triangle in the dash and probably not pass my inspection or ask me why if they could not figure it out which of course they could cause of the good ol OBDII. Plus that little light is annoying as hell and I hate driving with malfunction lights or other similar lights on. So i scoured the net trying to find that one fix. Well the light has appeared at the end of the tunnel, LOL. The funny thing about it is that the fix is soo easy. Sorry for the overjoyful intro but here is the fix:
DIY Resistor By the way, in case you are wondering about that hole drilling technique proposed by XenonValot, it ONLY works when you run straight off the battery and not through a relay which in my opinion is risky. If your kit has a wiring harness with fuses attached to it then you have a relay and this will eliminate the message. All it involves is a 10-watt 1 ohm wire wound resistor from Radio-Shack which costs $1.79. A pack of male quick disconnecting pins part#(64-3038)that you can crimp onto a wire costs $1.69. Make sure that the male connectors are the square type and you will also need some 14-gauge wire which radio shack only carried speaker wire in that size. So I went to Lowes and got a spindle of 14-gauge tin plated copper wire for about $7. If you don't alreay have one, buy a crimping/stripping tool, it will save you lots of time. Just follow the schematic and you should have error free xenons in no time! All in all it took me a little over an hour cuz some of the wires i cut were too short. Ohh it also helps to have the actual shunt resistor from the CEM with you so you can get an idea for the length of the wires. Once you build the resistor you may notice that the connectors are a little loose when you plug them into the CEM. For now i just put a piece of electrical tape over the resistor and the connected wires to hold it in incase it comes loose. I am in the process of figuring out a way to tighten the connection. Any questions PM me or reply to this thread. GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Okay I figured out why the pins were so loose in the CEM. You have to make sure that they are plugged in completely. Grab the part where the wire is crimpped in and push until it is as far in as it will go. I re-enforced mine with a strip of electrical tape just in case but it should do fine unless you have extremely bumpy roads.

I'm sure dealer/Service Center would be able to solve the issue if you were to bring it there but the above procedure is for those who wish to DIY.

Anyway Volvohh, great discovery and thanks for sharing.

Yeah I meant to get some pics up but I have been busy lately. I will get some up by the end of this week. And actually the dealer cannot reset anything to make to message go away. All they will tell you is that you'll have to live with it or remove the Xenons.

Hello,

Thanks for posting your solution. I tried building this resistor. I plugged in all the wires into the CEM - turn on the lights and still got the error message.

I went to check the resistor to ensure it was plugged in tightly and almost burned my finger - the resistor was very hot.....

Does yours heat up?

Please advise...

Thanks,
Steve

Sorry guys I have been sooo BOGGED with school and work the past couple of months and I have barely had a minute to even eat. I will for sure take pics of the resistor pack tomorrow and post them tomorrow too. And yes spas it will get pretty warm but shouldn't get scalding hot. It may have gotten hot because it was plugged in incorrectly. It will not hurt anything as long as nothing flammable is within the area which there shouldn't be.

Well I guess I won't be getting those pics up because my damn digital camera
decided to die. Honestly if you just follow that diagram a picture probably won't make that much of a difference.

what and where is the CEM? i turned off Daytime Running Lights DRL and no error messages when lights are in 1 position. However, lights do turn off after turning on. It's a crap shoot whether the lights will stay on the first time. Will this fix this problem?

also i tried installing with a relay that came with my kit. the lights turn on but after 20 sec or so, i hear a loud vibrating sound in the relay harness. then both lights turn off shortly after.

what's going on? how do i fix this?

A 1 ohm resistor is too large, thats using 10% of the power that goes to the headlights, that is why it gets so hot! Use 0.1 ohm. Better yet do the modification that is described the xenonvalot website where you drill a hole in the sense resistor part you get from the dealer. I'll update how that goes, I drilled too large a hole on the first one and broke the connection.

The CEM (central electronic module) is in the driver side above the brake pedal, behind the dashboard panel. If you look up from lying on the floor of the driver side you will see there are 2 screws you have to take out and the access panel comes down. The CEM panel is vertical and you do not have to take it out. The sense resistor module is the closest to the floor (on my S80). You know you took out the correct one if the headlights don't work at all after it is taken out. I ordered 2 extra of the 9442190 resistor modules from the dealer, they are $7 each.

IT WORKED!
Follow the directions in the website
http://www.xenonvalot.com/xenonfixvolvo.html
use a 1/16" dia drillbit (no larger) and drill exactly where he says.
No more flashing error!

Does this work for a 2005 S40?

I installed the HID conversion kit on my 2006 S40 and it works fine WITH the relay that came with the HID's. However when it is daytime my HID's sometimes decide to stay on even when I take the key out of the ignition. All I have to do is unplug the relay and plug it back on to fix the problem. I get NO flickering, but I still get the low beam error message on the dash. If I take this to the dealer will they void my warranty if they see the HID's installed?

Thanks
