So .... if the battery gets disconnected then the radio code has to be re-entered ... how do I do that without having to go to Volvo?

You will need to get the Serial# off the radio and have the Dealer look up the code.
They should do it Free of charge.

If the radio is the original, the dealer can get you the code from the VIN. You get three shots at it, then have to wait two hours or so with the ignition on in the accessories position for lock out to recycle.

Right now I'm MAD as as the preverbal "Wet Hen"...

My Volvo battery died on me and I replaced it with a aftermarket battery.
My SC-901 radio is now requesting the 4 digit code.
I enter the code I was given on a hand written card from the dealer when the radio was replaced a couple of years ago.
The code does not work.

When I contacted the dealer, they looked up the code via my VIN number and gave me the same code that isn't working.

The service writer I talked to told me that "When you changed the battery, it obviously shorted out something in the radio and you'll have to replace it."

Sorry, I don't buy his BS ... if the radio were TRUELY defective, it woudn't be asking for the code and then locking me out.

The sequence shown is:

CODE
CODE REPEAT
CODE REPEAT
SYSTEM OFF

I'm NOT about to have the dealer force me to purchase a new SC-901!!!

Short of ripping the thing out and going to an aftermarket unit or ... sending the radio off to England for the X24C01 smd EEPROM to be read and decoded ... do I have any other options?

Someone mentioned that Volvo could look up the code via the radio serial number, rather than my VIN ... is that correct?

If not, does anyone have the phone number for Volvo customer relations in the US?

Any help/insight would GREATLY be appriciated!

The code is unique to each radio.
If system is OFF you should disconnect the radio from the car or disconnect the battery for a few hours and try again.

Sorry I wasn't clear about it in my previous note ...

After entering the code 3 times ... the radio displays "SYSTEM OFF"...
A few hours latter, the system resets itself and again displays "CODE"
and allows for 3 additional trys...

My STRONG belief is when the Volvo dealership swapped out the radio, they recorded the wrong code. My question remains, if I pull out the radio to get the radio's serial number, can the dealership lookup the code?

Comments/Recommendations?

When I called th edealer to get my code, the woman i spoke with asked for my cars VIN. She didnt even ask for the radios serial code, what she did ask however was whether or not mine was the original radio. I had no way of knowing, because I bought my car used, but I told her the radio was original anyway. I didnt wanna go into the whole "well I cant give you the code, because you're not the original owner, and there's no way of telling blah blah blah"

So I give her the vin, she gives me the code. I asked her if she was sure that this was the right code, because she looked it up really fast (and not to mention, I had already tried the code I thought would work, twice) she said that she was sure. The '98 HPT only has about 6 distinct vin numbers I believe she said, so with the vin I have, there's only one code. I used the code while on the phone with her, it worked right away. Whole process took no more than 5 minutes.

As I said, I contacted the Dealership that replaced the radio and gave them my VIN number ... the code they gave me is the same one on the hand written card I received at the time of the replacement ... which does not work.

That's why I'm asking about going back to the radio's Serial Number to get the code. If the individual who recorded the new code to my VIN number made a typo, the Radio's serial number should give the correct code. (Crossing my fingers)!

I just LOVE lazy people ...

I decided to pull the radio to get the serial number off of it ... much to my amuzement was the CORRECT unlock code written on the radio's serial number
label!

So much for security ... and the dealerships VIN database!!!

Thanks to all who replyed!

Instead of being on for two hours, does it work if you disconnect and reconnect the battery?
