Thought it'd be a good idea to share the wealth here and pool our experiences, to form a checklist of things to look out for when buying a used S80.

I'll kick off with:

1. Cold start the car - if it delays it could be the starter motor or ECU
2. Check warning lights on dash (but these may well be cleared ahead of you purchasing!)
3. Check under car for oil leaks on tarmac - if the guy insists on picking you up and/or has moved the car assume there is a leak from CPV box, Turbo oil return lines (£400 estimate), or Power Steering hose
4.Check wheel alignment - get em to take hands off wheel and apply brakes gently then harder - make sure it doesnt pull to one side vigorously as it couldve been accidented or kerbed
5. Check all lights carefully

Anyone fancy contributing - we could always refine it as we go and end up with a definitive list.

Cheers,

D

My advice would be don't buy one, especially an early one.

Drive the car for a while and check for the infamous "Hissing Brakes"

I guess if i had to do it all over again I probably wouldn't because it had been a pain because of all the repairs. But once you have all the known issues with these S80s fixed, they really are a great driving car. But with my experience I have now with my 2000 S80 T6, I would probably either buy a 02 or newer or nothing at all.
