Dropped my 2000 S/80 off today for the electronic throtle module. Protocol for repair is as follows (at least in VA, USA where I live).

1. Clean ETM and download new software update first, return to customer.

2. If customer continues to have problem (say, your car engine cuts out at 50MPH while making a turn, like mine did before I brought it in today), then return car to Volvo for R&R of ETM. I understand that Volvo is trying to reduce cost, but the ETM in my car is definately shot.

NOTE: Was looking at my service records and found that I had the ETM replaced once already at 57K. Told Volvo, they assure me it will still continue to be replaced gratis as long as <200K and <= 10 years since in service date.

Well,

Volvo says they took for test ride and can't replicate problem of surge, stall, etc. Could not read any codes so........won't even clean...although they did download some software.

The techs agree that the car has all symtoms of failing ETM, but won't clean or replace until the thing craters. So now a three step process:

1. SOFTWARE

2. More stalls, surges, etc.....hopfully no accidents (CLEAN)

3. Total failure of ETM (like the last time that left me stranded 50 miles from home on Easter Sunday)......REPLACEMENT

Volvo is really working this pseudo-recall to it's benefit..........illustrates how many bad ETMs are out on the road

I just don't know why these jokers just don't come clean!!! Just redesign the damn thing, issue a recall, and put this problem behind them before someone gets killed!! That will probably happen before any real results from Volvo happen. Just like down the road from where I live, this intersection w/ stop signs only caused 1,000 confirmed accidents but it took 3 teenage girls dying before they put lights and made it a 4way. Sorry Tech, I just had to vent..... I know, I know, wrong forum. :P
