If the cambelt is damaged, would that affect other parts of the car?

:cat: Hi there ALB. :00000732: to Volvo forums.

:liebe011: for joining us.

Just a few thoughts:

if your cam belt is damaged-don't even think about starting the engine. You might end up with some really serious electrical problems. Like a piston in your alternator.

At the worst-you could end up with sixteen valves flying out through your bonnet (hood).

I'm no expert on these things-they will respond with several more suggestions very soon I hope.

Please keep in touch. Great to have you on board.

Cheers :right:

I had a cambelt break once on my Toyota while the car was accelerating, many years ago.

All that had to be done was a cambelt replacement. The mechanic said I was lucky nothing else was damaged. I understand vehicles with more than 2 valves per cylinder can be seriously wrecked if the cambelt breaks. Which is why it is important to have it replaced regularly.

Cambelts on s80 are due every 150k.

I'm getting mine done at 130k

Am I right in thinking an OHV engine will survive a belt failure, but an OHC engine will be killed?

Don't BMWs have chains instead of belts?
