Hello All,

I've never owned anything but Fords and Jeeps and I'm tired of fixing them. So for the first time in my life I'm leaning heavily towards something else; namely, Volvo's.

I was wondering if you could aid my investigation?

I have 4 kids and so I regularly need to carry 6 people. Volvo's 3rd bench is very attractive for this purpose. If I go Volvo it would be a Wagon (Cargo/Kids), never a Sedan.

With those kids, my safety concerns and reasons for being attracted to Volvo are apparent.

I need something that "JUST WORKS".

I need to keep the cost under $5,000.00 US.

So far it "seems" like the 850 Turbo Wagon is what I'm looking for. I was wondering if "you" could comment on whether or not the 850 TWagon is at that "it just works" level of reliability that I need, or if particular years had serious defects that I should avoid.

In general, can you just point me in the right direction given my above requirements so that I can feel comfortable with continuing to research specific Volvo Models and Years?

If you're buying a car directly from a used car dealer, it is understood that a fair amount of work would be needed to put the car in shape, sometimes...

but then again, all cars are subjected to the same condition...

Since your limited to 5000.00 I would highly suggest the 240 or 740 model wagons. You can probably find one for under 5,000.00 in great condition. These volvo models in my opinion are the most reliable. i would doubt you could find a 850 for under 5,000.00. maybe a 93 or 94 model but those have terrible transmission problems so i would stay away from those. 90+ 240 wagons are very good. id say 90 and up 740s are very good as well. 240s i know some come with 3rd row seating if not they could be 200 to 300 for the 3rd row seat but would fit what you are looking for. Good Luck searching for your VOLVO! :00000732:
